In 1950, after years of experiments, Mexican television emerged with the creation of a first channel: XHTV Canal 4. Mr. Rómulo O'Farrill received the concession and Mexico became the first Latin American country with its own television.
By 1951, the second Mexican television channel was officially on air: XEWTV Canal 2, a channel founded by Don Emilio Azcárraga Vidaurreta, a true pioneer of Mexican media. It was originally broadcasted from XEW "The Voice of Latin America coming from Mexico".
That same year, Televicentro Headquarters, on Chapultepec Avenue, were opened, and became the main center of activities of the new communication medium.
The engineer Guillermo González Camarena, inventor of Color TV, received, in 1952 the concession of Mexico's third channel: XHGC Canal 5.
In 1955, channels 2, 4 y 5 came together under the company name: Telesistema Mexicano.
In 1968, a new channel appeared: XHTMTV Canal 8, "Independent Television of Mexico", property of Monterrey business men installed in Mexico City's San Ángel Inn.
The fusion of Telesistema Mexicano and Televisión Independiente de México (Independent Television of Mexico), in 1973 formed TELEVISA (Television Via Satellite), which, since then, coordinated, operated and broadcasted channels 2, 4, 5 and 8.
In 1985, Canal 8 changed its signal to XEQ Canal 9, which, at first, was a cultural channel, and later took on a directly commercial line.
On September 1988, Televisa created the first Spanish Language satellite news system: ECO (Orbital Communications Company), broadcasted live 24 hours a day in Mexico, the United States, Central and South America, Western Europe and Northern Africa. Notwithstanding its innovative format, ECO went off the air in the year 2001. Its format was not adequate for broadcast TV.
In 1997, Mr. Emilio Azcárraga Jean assumes the presidency of Grupo Televisa.
On June, 3rd, 2001, channel 9 becomes Galavisión; and on April 30th, channel 4 becomes 4TV.
