Another dream came true! Today, a Teletón's oncology wigs factory was opened in Aguascalientes
Last May 18, in presence of members from the Fundación Teleton's board and some special guests, the opening ceremony for the Teletón's Oncology Wigs factory was held. This factory was specially built to produce the dreams of thousands of children with cancer who have lost their hair.
Fundación Teleton's chairman, Fernando Landeros Verdugo, assured that the oncology wigs factory is their smallest work in terms of square meters, but it is the one that represents the highest value throughout the 15 years of Teletón. He said that the Pelontón (a telethon for collecting hair) transformed the calling to generosity since it showed the difference between giving something and giving yourself by touching a part of the body and giving it to someone else.
Fundación Teletón's Chairman thanked all the donors of the Pelontón and stated that there is a wonderful story behind every braid. "So far, all the oncology and aesthetic wigs were manufactured in Asia, this is the first oncology wig factory in the American Continent and it is in Aguascalientes, a state of a huge tradition. Here, the oncology wigs are to be produced by the best hands in the world, the hands of the women from Aguascalientes. Moreover, they will be made by the hands of the CRIT's moms. They will be the best wigs because these hands understand better the pain".
The Foundation's chairman informed that, so far, there are enough braids to elaborate oncology wigs for all the boys and girls with cancer in the country.
On the other hand, Aguascalientes' Governor, Carlos Lozano de la Torre, stated: "The wigs factory's facilities, the only one in the Continent and the first built outside Asia, is a recognition and effort of the people from Aguascalientes which will continue to support all the initiatives addressed to the Mexican people's well-being. We acknowledge this new effort made by Fernando Landeros, Fundación Teletón and the CRIT system, which will be rewarded with the happiness of those people who are going through difficult times and who, despite this, are a role model for personal betterment, willpower and love for life".
During the ceremony, oncology wigs were handed to girls who have lost their hair due to cancer.
Up until today, Teletón has delivered 3,290 wigs. Unlike a beauty wig, oncology wigs are specially made. They have a special base that protects the scalp from being hurt since it becomes very sensitive after chemotherapy. The process is thorough: first, hair is selected and the hair less than 5 cm long is removed because it is not useful for manufacturing wigs. After this, hair is washed and put to sun dry, then, it is processed and ponytails with the same size and color are shaped. With these ponytails, hair curtains are made and sewed to a very soft cap which will not injure the user's scalp. Finally, the upper part of the wig is knitted hair by hair in order to look natural. Once it is ready, it is washed, combed, packed and delivered.
The Teletón's Oncology Wigs Factory will produce 2,500 wigs a year, which will return joy and increase the self-esteem of our children with cancer, helping them through this rather painful process.
The oncology wigs will be handed for free by entering our web site www.teleton.org and completing the relevant form. They could also be requested in any of the 19 Teletón Rehabilitation Centers.
With the opening of this wigs factory, another dream is materialized. It is not just oncology wigs that will be produced in these factories, but also the dreams and hopes of all the children with cancer throughout the country.
